The State of Missouri enacted House Bill 2006 in 2024, allocating $1 million in federal funds to the University of Missouri's Regenerative Agriculture program for a three-year algae research project. Algae, particularly microalgae, offer a promising, sustainable solution for enhancing soil health, supporting climate mitigation, and transforming agricultural and environmental management practices. This entry summarizes key findings from the 2025 review article by Gurau, Imran, and Ray, highlighting the diverse applications and benefits of algae in agricultural systems.


Overview

Algae are photosynthetic organisms capable of rapid growth and high CO2 fixation efficiency. With applications ranging from biofertilizers and soil conditioners to wastewater treatment and biochar production, algae present a holistic tool for addressing environmental and agricultural challenges. Their cultivation does not compete with food crops for arable land and can be integrated into circular resource systems.
